3DX: Grade 5-6, Level 1

In the following sections you will find the resources necessary for 3DX Grades 5-6, Level 1 class. There will be an outline, list of links, related files, and how-to videos for each weekly class. Students will use the “Concept-to-Reality” process to create their projects each week.

Tentative Outline:

Week 1:  Intro to 3DX – 3D printing, 2 LED project CAD design, Arduino simulator

Week 2:  Soldering basics, wiring a switch, publishing a project. 2 LED Project due

Week 3:  Meshmixer (creative CAD), Traffic light CAD design and Arduino simulator

Week 4:  Soldering series and parallel electrical circuits. Traffic Light Project due

Week 5:  NeoPixels – Create a brilliant light display with creative CAD design

Week 6:  Assembly, wiring, and programming. NeoPixel Project due

Week 7:  Inputs/Outputs – CAD Design for push button, potentiometer and LEDs  

Week 8:  Assembly, wiring, and programming. Input/Output Project due

Week 9:  Servo Motors and moving parts – CAD designing multiple part projects

Week 10: Assembly, wiring, and programming. NeoPixel/Servo Project due                                   Final Project Presentations.

Week 1: Introduction to 3D Literacy®


In the 1st week of 3DX students will assemble their 3D Literacy® Learning Stations and become familiar with the 3DX project creation process.  They will be introduced to free 3D printing resources including Slic3r, Thingiverse, TinkerCAD and 3D Programming resources including an Arduino simulator tool. The goal is for the students to learn how to use the 3D printers, create a CAD design for their first 3DX project, learn how to wire and program a circuit using the Arduino simulator.

    2. Creating a simple circuit
    3. Writing a simple program

  • Introduction to the Maker Space – tools, machines, safety, locker assignments
  • Assemble 3D Literacy® Learning Stations
  • Introduction to Slic3r – The open source 3D Printing G-Code generator
  • Introduction to Thingiverse – The hub for open source 3D models
  • Download and print LED Post
  • Download Arduino IDE
  • Load the “Blink” example program and build single LED circuit on breadboard
  • Test program
  • Add additional LED, change the program to add 2nd LED and have alternating flashing
  • Assemble LEDs into the 3D printed bracket, wire the circuit, test the program
